English Language Requirement

NOTE: THESE TEST RESULTS ARE ONLY FOR REGISTRATIONS PRIOR TO JANUARY 1, 2025

 

Applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language skills to be successful in the program.  

Standardized Test Scores/ Evidence: 

  • Evidence that 3 years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8-12) has been completed in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages.
  • Evidence of post-secondary education completed in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Minimum overall score of 5.5.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) IBT: Overall score of 46
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT): Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing 5
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP): Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Overall Score of 40

Steps to sign up for the English Language Assessment:

  1. Upload your government issued ID below.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Select a date and time from the available appointments.
  4. Pay the $50 fee and click Schedule Event.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. A confirmation email of the appointment and receipt will be sent to you.

Your English Language ability will be assessed in the following 4 domains:

  • Grammar Assessment- Multiple choice section. 9 questions will be asked.
  • Oral Language (Speaking and Listening) Assessment- 4 questions will be asked. Student will respond. Student is assessed on their communication skills including but not limited to grammar, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, pronunciation, and expression.
  • Reading/Comprehension Assessment- Student will be asked to orally read a passage. 4 questions will be asked. Student is assessed on their comprehension, grammar, and fluency.
  • Writing Assessment- Student is asked to write 6-10 sentences on a specific topic. The student is assessed on writing skills including but not limited to meaning (developing ideas, details), style (word choice, sentence fluency and voice), form (connecting and transitioning words, sequencing and organization, introduction and conclusion, and paragraphing) and conventions (capitals, punctuation, spelling, word choice, grammar, and syntax).

A student must score 40 points or higher out of a potential 50 points. A student must score a minimum of 10 points per domain. If a student scores below 40 on the ELA, they will have to wait 6 months before re-taking it. Acceptance is at the discretion of the Senior Educational Administrator.

Students are expected to be honest in all their activities at the College. All forms of cheating and/or plagiarism are unacceptable. If a student is academically dishonest, they will automatically fail and forfeit their $50.00. As well, they may be barred from taking a course in the future with CCBC.

Preparation:
  • Be prepared to start the assessment 10 minutes before the session.
  • Ensure you know how to use zoom.
  • Have a few lined papers and 2 pens ready for use.
  • Have a device that takes pictures. You will be sending a sample of your writing via email.
