Medical Esthetics – Laser Foundations Program

(MEL Program)

 

The Medical Esthetics – Laser Foundations Program was reviewed and approved by the Registrar of the Private Training Institutions Branch (PTIB) of the Ministry of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills in British Columbia, Canada.

Upon completion of the Medical Esthetics – Laser Foundations program, students will be able to:

  • Operate Lasers and Light Therapy: Use laser and light therapy technologies with a thorough understanding of their considerations and applications.
  • Manage Health and Safety: Address health and safety issues, including responsibilities and liabilities, ensuring a safe environment for clients and practitioners.
  • Conduct Client Consultations: Perform client consultations, addressing individual needs and considerations.
  • Understand Skin and Hair Biology: Explain the fundamentals of skin biology, anatomy, physiology, hair biology, and growth cycles to inform treatment choices.
  • Perform Hair Removal: Execute permanent hair removal procedures on various areas of the body using specialized laser equipment.
  • Maintain Hygiene Standards: Demonstrate proper sanitation and disinfection techniques to ensure a hygienic treatment environment.
  • Apply Laser Physics and Safety: Understand and apply the principles of laser physics, including laser parameters and safety protocols, and operate lasers effectively.
  • Uphold Professionalism: Exhibit high standards of professional accountability and ethical behavior during client consultations and treatments.
  • Conduct Assessments and Treatments: Perform thorough pre- and post-laser assessments and manage treatments effectively.
  • Test and Maintain Equipment: Regularly test and maintain equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Ensure Safety Practices: Implement and adhere to safety measures for clients and practitioners to prevent incidents and ensure a safe practice environment.
 

Course Description:

The Medical Esthetics—Laser Foundations program (MEL) offers training in noninvasive laser cosmetic treatments. Students will gain the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to perform laser procedures safely and effectively. The program emphasizes professional and ethical standards and aims to develop strong client communication skills. Graduates will be well-prepared to deliver high-quality treatments in spa, home business, or salon environments.

The program starts on the third week of January, March, May, July, September, and November.

Program length:

Part-time – 3 weeks 

Delivery Method: Combined Delivery- Asynchronous and Synchronous (in-person hands-on training). 

Hands-on training will be held on Tuesdays from 5 to 9 PM at 145- 1110 Ewen Avenue, New Westminster, B.C., V3M 5E4.

Asynchronous learning will be conducted online by distance, allowing students the flexibility to complete coursework on their schedule without set class times. Assignments will be submitted through a Learning Management System.

Admission Requirements: 

  • High school graduation or General Education Development (GED) or BC Dogwood Diploma. Min 19 years if applicants are not high school graduates or possess an equivalent educational qualification.
  • Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency through prior education in English at grade 10 level or higher or through an English language assessment (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent standard test.). To be successful in the program, applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language skills. This program is taught in English. 

Standardized Test Scores/ Evidence: 

  • Evidence that 3 years of full-time secondary school (Grades 8-12) has been completed in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages.
  • Evidence of post-secondary education completed in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Minimum overall score of 5.5.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) IBT: Overall score of 46
  • Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT): Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing 5
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP): Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5 and Writing 5
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Overall Score of 40

  • Assignment completion/tasks/quizzes – 40%
  • Skill Demonstrations – 60%

  • Textbook:  approximately $100
  • Tuition: $3800 
  • Application Fee: $150 is paid at the time of registration and is non-refundable 

International students, please note: 

  • CCBC is a private institution. Graduates of private training institutions are not eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP).
  •  If a program is 15 weeks or longer, you must have sufficient healthcare insurance coverage for your stay in Canada.

Graduates of this program can pursue careers as professionals in various settings, including spas/salons, health centers, cruise ships, or private practices, specializing in non-invasive cosmetic treatments. Potential job titles include:

  • Laser Technician
  • Laser Esthetician
  • Laser Aesthetician
  • Skin Laser Technician

Graduates should verify whether licensing requirements apply in their specific region or province.

This program does not lead to employment in a career occupation that is regulated by a regulator.
